Memorylast was created on October 31st 2008 and is currently hosted by Bluehost. The name Memorylast has no specific meaning, it’s derived from the words ‘memory’ and ‘everlasting’. I thought it would make a good blog/site name since blogs and personal sites are all about chronicling your life.

This venture into the site-making business began when I first discovered the internet. I was 5 years old and we had to make an e-mail account for school so the teachers could get in touch with us. My dad helped me create an Hotmail e-mail address and I started playing around with the e-mail settings. I was fascinated by the internet so I spent more of my time surfing the net in my dad’s study room.

My dad thought I was hogging his study room 24/7 and he didn’t like having a kid invading his territory so he bought me a computer (best solution ever). When I was 8, social networking sites, virtual pet sites and flash games took the school by storm. Neopets was the biggest trend back then and my friend helped me sign up. At first I just used it to play games, but then I realized that there were userlookups, guilds and all that. I found that a lot of people had amazing userlookups with colourful backgrounds, so I went forth to find the source of this eye candy. I discovered HTML, but didn’t know how to use it. I looked for some pre-made layouts and started absorbing the code like you’d do with Math. What input affects what output. All these sources were like worked examples for me. Eventually, I started up several guilds and pestered my friends to join. I used premade guild layouts at first but after a while, I began modifying the layouts and creating guild websites using Freewebs. I even used Microsoft Paint to create crappy looking graphics.

A few years later, the hype had wore off and Neopets was officially dubbed ‘uncool’. Social networking sites became the next big thing. All my friends made Xanga sites and I made one too. I started blogging and commenting on my friend’s blogs. I visited my friend’s Xanga and she put up this amazing layout. I discovered that it was from Createblog so I scoured Createblog for pretty layouts. Eventually, I grew out of using premade layouts so I edited the premades to make them my own. I thought making layouts was fun so I started up a Xanga layout site where I offered free Xanga layouts. I was pretty fluent in HTML at that point.

When I was 10, I moved on to professional graphics programs like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. My best friend was playing Neopets again so I did too. I started making graphics on Neopets and me and my friend made a Freewebs site for graphics. I joined a guild where everyone was good at making graphics so I was inspired by the things they made. I saw that some people used textures and brushes in their graphics and that’s when I discovered the web scene. The web scene was filled with graphics and resource websites started up by teenagers. I wanted to make a site like that so I got hosted on a sub-domain.

The site started off as memorylast.totalh.com, a free subdomain hosted by Byethost. Eventually, I mustered up the courage to fill in the hosting application at Connito and Connie accepted. Memorylast was rainie.connito.net for a year until I bought my own domain and hosting in 2008.
